A business address to South-West Nigerian entrepreneurs

AI Tools for Personal and Business Growth

Dr Olusola Ayoola

Practical AI for business owners — from settling arguments with Meta AI to auditing your books, marketing without an agency, and preparing for AI agents that close deals at 3am.

"The businessman who digitises today will be the one whose AI agent is closing deals at 3am while he is asleep."

Good morning, distinguished gentlemen. I want to start by asking a simple question. How many of you have argued in a WhatsApp group this week? Yes. All of you. And how many of you lost that argument because you did not have the facts at your fingertips? That is exactly why we are here today.

We are living in a time where knowledge is no longer the exclusive property of professors and consultants. A motorcycle spare parts dealer in Dugbe market, Ibadan, now has access to the same intelligence as a Harvard-trained business strategist — if he knows how to use the right tools. That is what AI has done. It has democratised expertise. And if you are a businessman in South-West Nigeria today and you are not paying attention to this, your competitor already is.

What is AI, really?

Your brain works by recognising patterns. When you have been in business for twenty years, you can look at a customer's face and know whether they are serious or just wasting your time. You can look at your sales for January and know whether February will be hard or easy. You are not doing complex mathematics in your head. You are recognising patterns from years of experience and stored data.

That is exactly what AI does. It is a system that has been trained on enormous amounts of data — text, images, sounds, numbers, conversations — and it has learned to recognise patterns in all of that data. When a bank's AI flags a suspicious transaction on your account, it is because it has seen millions of transactions and learned what fraud looks like. When a supermarket's system automatically reorders stock, it has learned the pattern of when a product runs low.

Data is the raw material. Patterns are what you extract from data. And AI is the engine that finds patterns faster and more accurately than any human being ever could. So the more data you have about your business, your customers and your operations, the more powerful AI becomes for you. Data is your most valuable business asset. Not your building. Not your fleet of vehicles. Your data.

The tool you already have in your pocket

Many of you are already using Meta AI without knowing its full power. When you are in a group chat and someone is arguing about whether a particular government policy affects import duties, you can type "@Meta AI" directly in that group and ask for the facts. It will answer in the group, in front of everyone. Your argument is settled.

But Meta AI is more than a debate referee. You can speak to it — literally hold your phone up and talk to it like a knowledgeable friend. Ask it to help you write a message to a difficult customer, summarise a long document, or think through a business decision. It works on WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, and it works remarkably well even on Nigerian mobile data. You do not have to type long things. Just speak.

Your personal life, upgraded

One of the biggest challenges for a businessman is that there is never enough time to learn. AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are like having a brilliant friend who has read everything. Instead of paying a lawyer for a first consultation, you can ask, "Explain to me in plain English how the recent CAMA changes affect a small limited liability company in Nigeria," and keep asking follow-up questions until you understand.

If you are preparing a presentation, you can ask for a structure for your talking points and walk into the room confident. For long reports, tools like NotebookLM let you upload a document and ask, "What are the three main risks in this report?" And there are AI systems today that can learn how you write and draft full replies to your emails — you review, you approve, you send.

Marketing your business without a marketing team

Say you sell building materials in Sango Ota and want to run a dry-season promotion for roofing sheets. Ask Meta AI or ChatGPT for a Facebook ad targeting contractors and homeowners in Ogun State, with a WhatsApp contact. Within thirty seconds you have it. Ask for five versions and pick the best.

Canva AI generates professional graphics from a description. Tools like Runway, Sora, Kling and HeyGen generate video from a script — an advert, a product demonstration, a staff training video — without a camera or a crew. ElevenLabs can clone your own voice, so radio adverts, explainer videos and phone greetings speak in your voice without you recording another word. And platforms like Wati and ManyChat automate WhatsApp campaigns: a boutique in Ikeja sends new-stock alerts to two thousand customers every Friday while the owner is in church.

Customer service, proposals and finance

Every one of you has lost a customer because nobody picked up the phone at 9pm. A WhatsApp chatbot answers your most common questions twenty-four hours a day — prices, location, delivery, returns. For proposals and tenders, AI helps you write well-structured submissions in a fraction of the time, and research tools find credible sources and references.

On finance, remember one thing above all: AI for auditing. If you have staff handling money, run your bank statements against your internal records with AI regularly. A transport company owner in Ibadan discovered three years of systematic theft by a trusted accountant simply by running his statements through an AI comparison. Small, regular discrepancies that human eyes would never have caught. Thirty-six months of theft. Found in forty minutes.

Your website, built today

If your business does not have a website, your business does not exist to the generation now entering its peak spending years. AI website builders generate a complete professional site from a single paragraph. You add your photos and contact details, and you publish.

Recruitment and human resources

AI can screen every CV against your criteria and shortlist the strongest candidates. Over time, as you track who performs well, the system learns what a successful employee in your business looks like — and your recruitment gets smarter with every hire.

Data: the asset you are not building

Every customer that walks through your door, calls your number or sends a WhatsApp message is a data point. Right now, most of you are letting that data disappear into your head, a jotter on your desk, and messages you will never find again. The businesses that dominate the next ten years in Nigeria will be the ones collecting, storing and analysing customer data today. A school owner in Ogbomoso started collecting structured data on her students' parents and, within a year, redesigned her fee structure, communication and bus routes. Retention went from sixty to eighty-nine percent. No advertising spend. Just data, intelligently used.

Digitise everything first

None of this works if your business still runs on paper, memory and informal processes. Every transaction, attendance record, complaint, delivery and invoice must live in a digital system you own. If you cannot operate a computer yourself, there is no shame in that — employ someone who can manage your data, your systems and your digital operations. Automation platforms like Zapier, Make and n8n let you build workflows without code: a customer pays and a receipt goes out; an enquiry arrives and is logged and assigned. For field staff, location tools — including YardCode, built right here in Nigeria — tell you where your people are. When your business is digitised and your data is clean, AI begins to see patterns you never noticed.

A new department run by AI

With your experience, procedures, pricing logic and brand voice captured, you can build a department staffed by AI: a customer asks about delivery to Osogbo at 11pm on a Sunday and gets an accurate answer in your voice; they pay, the bank notifies your platform, the receipt goes out, dispatch is triggered and inventory updates — without you lifting a finger. Your fifteen staff, freed from repetitive tasks, focus on relationships, problem-solving, quality and growth. Your business does not shrink. It scales.

The future that is already arriving

AI agents do not just answer questions — they act. In the next five years, when someone wants to order from your business, it may be their AI agent contacting your AI agent to negotiate, confirm, pay and schedule delivery. This is why digitisation is not optional. It is the price of admission to the next economy. The businessman who does this today will be the one whose AI agent is closing deals at 3am while he is asleep.

A word on ethics and responsibility

AI is powerful, but it is not perfect. It can be biased if trained on unfair past decisions. Left unsupervised, it can give wrong information or make commitments you did not authorise. Review its decisions, audit its outputs, and keep a human being checking what matters. No AI system should make final decisions about people without human review. The AI advises; the responsibility remains yours. Use AI boldly. Use it wisely. And never use it as an excuse to stop thinking.

Invest in knowledge. Invest in people.

Learning AI is investing in the future relevance of your business. You can learn enough to direct it intelligently, or employ people who can — but employing the wrong person is worse than employing no one. A poorly implemented system can expose customer data, make financial errors at scale, or automate a bad process and make it run faster in the wrong direction. At RAIN, we train individuals and organisations in artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and data science, with Nigerian examples for Nigerian businesses — and our graduates are practical, deployable and ready.

Gentlemen, the tools exist. Many are free, and most work on the phones in your pockets right now. Digitise your operations. Collect your data. Automate your processes. Deploy AI ethically and deliberately. Invest in knowledge — yours and your team's. Learn AI. Adopt AI. And do it now, while the advantage still belongs to the early movers.

We are in the most consequential technological moment in human history. The question is not whether this moment will change Nigerian business. It will. The question is whether the businessmen in this room will be leading that change — or trying to catch up. The choice is yours. Make it wisely.

Thank you.
